2016 SUBARU NAVIGATION SYSTEM REVIEW DRIVER
The top screen containing the audio controls and lower screen for the climate control system and EyeSight suite of driver assists, including forward automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, sway warnings, and adaptive cruise control with lane keeping assist. The Base model features two 7-inch touchscreens, one on top of the other. Inside, the 2022 Subaru Outback’s most attention-grabbing element is the tablet-like vertical touchscreen. Premium Outback models and up include a tablet-like 11.6-inch screen with controls for audio, climate, and X-MODE all-wheel drive settings. The Wilderness model sacrifices some efficiency for its off-road ability, showing 22 city, 26 highway, and 24 combined. The Outback gets decent gas mileage: 2.5-liter models are rated at 26 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 combined, while those with the turbocharged 2.4-liter return 23 city, 30 highway, and 27 combined - better than Volvo’s V60 Cross Country and Audi’s A4 Allroad, though it’s not as fuel-efficient as Toyota’s RAV4. It’s immediate and automatic, and it allows the driver to power through most challenges. If the system detects that one wheel is lifted an inch off the ground, it will send power to the other three. It also automatically adjusts traction based on the situation. Its two-function X-MODE all-wheel-drive system sets the wagon up for snow, dirt and mud. All-wheel drive is standard across the Outback line, as is Subaru’s continuously variable transmission with “eight-speed manual” shift mode and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT models have a 2.4-liter Boxer that, while slightly smaller, is turbocharged to produce 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The Premium model comes in at $30,270 Limited at $34,720 Onyx Edition XT at $36,270 Wilderness at $38,120 Touring at $38,620 Limited XT at $39,120 and the Touring XT is offered at $41,070.īase, Premium, Limited, and Touring trim levels come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine, rated at 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. The Base model Outback starts at an MSRP of $28,070, including the $1,125 destination charge. The 2022 model year sees the Subaru Outback add an eighth trim level with the all-new, off-road minded Wilderness. New to the 2022 Outback lineup, the Wilderness trim level shows out in its model-exclusive Geyser Blue finish.

At home in toney neighborhoods as much as it is off the beaten path, the Outback is a vehicle that can do it all in a way few others can claim. Any Outback trim will have no trouble hauling a family and cargo while tackling the odd bumpy trail or snowy commute. The Outback remains roomy inside and offers a different exterior aesthetic than the evermore ubiquitous SUV. Now in its sixth generation, the Outback’s combination of SUV-like cargo room, wagon proportions, and all-weather capability put it in a class nearly all its own, especially in its price range. Since its introduction in 1994, the Subaru Outback has grown from a bulked-up version of the Legacy into a top-selling model, among Subaru’s flagship wagons/crossovers with the Forester and Crosstrek.
